Rural Marvila

2020

Photographic research and cartographic analysis on the Marvila neighborhood in Lisbon.

The city of Lisbon maintained a strong agricultural character until the second half of the last century, thanks to its particular morphological and geographical condition. Marvila, in the eastern part of Lisbon, is a recently urbanized area that still shows evident traces of its old agricultural occupation. New infrastructures and multi-story buildings arose in the last decades without taking into account the natural resources of the area, deeply marking a territory that had long followed the slow pace of the rural world. Large areas have been abandoned and lost their original identity over the years, becoming marginal urban voids and leading to social and ecological issues.
